A moist and tender banana bread with a rich, nutty flavor from browned butter and pockets of melty chocolate chips. Perfect for cozy mornings or any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, browned
  • 3 medium ripe bananas, mashed
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Brown the Butter: Place 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently as the butter melts, foams, and then turns a golden brown with nutty aroma (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool slightly but not harden.
  2. Mash the Bananas: In a large bowl, mash 3 medium ripe bananas with a fork until mostly smooth with a few chunks remaining for texture.
  3. Mix Sugars and Eggs: Add 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, and 2 large eggs to the bananas. Stir well to combine, then mix in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and the slightly cooled brown butter.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  5. Fold Dry into Wet: Gently add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, folding with a spatula until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the bread tender.
  6. Add Chocolate Chips: Toss chocolate chips in a tablespoon of flour, then fold in 3/4 cup chocolate chips evenly throughout the batter.
  7. Prepare Pan and Bake: Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray. Pour the batter in and smooth the top. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool: Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Watch the butter carefully while browning to avoid burning. Toss chocolate chips in flour before folding to prevent sinking. Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the bread tender. Use very ripe bananas for best sweetness and moisture. Baking times may vary; start checking at 50 minutes.
