Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • About 1 cup colored candy-coated chocolates (e.g., M&Mโ€™s) for pencil erasers and toppings
  • 1/2 cup (90 g) white chocolate chips (optional, for pencil wood detail)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl or on the stovetop until fully liquid but not browned; let cool slightly.
  3. Whisk together sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract in a large bowl until smooth and slightly pale, about 2 minutes.
  4. Slowly pour in the melted butter while whisking gently to combine.
  5. Sift cocoa powder, flour, and salt into the wet mixture and fold gently with a spatula until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 25-28 minutes, until edges are set but the center still jiggles slightly when shaken.
  8. Remove from oven and immediately press candy-coated chocolates into the top in rows to mimic pencil erasers.
  9. Optionally, melt white chocolate chips slightly and drizzle or place small lines near candy erasers for wood detail.
  10. Let brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into pencil-sized strips.

Notes

Do not overmix the batter to keep brownies fudgy, not cakey. Watch baking time closely and remove when center still jiggles slightly. Press candy toppings while brownies are warm but not hot to avoid melting. Use a sharp serrated knife wiped clean between cuts for neat edges. Refrigerate briefly if candies melt too quickly during decorating.
