A quick and easy recipe featuring crispy gnocchi browned in butter with fresh sage and toasted walnuts for a nutty, aromatic, and comforting dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 g) potato gnocchi (store-bought or homemade)
  • 4 tablespoons (55 g) unsalted butter
  • 1215 fresh sage leaves, whole
  • ยฝ cup (60 g) toasted walnuts, halves or coarsely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the ingredients: wash and pat dry sage leaves, mince garlic if using, and roughly chop walnuts if desired.
  2. Toast the walnuts in a skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently for 3-4 minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Lower heat to medium-low and add butter to the same skillet. Swirl gently as it melts and brown for 3-5 minutes until golden with a nutty aroma.
  4. Add sage leaves and minced garlic to the browned butter. Cook for 1-2 minutes until sage crisps up, stirring gently.
  5. Increase heat to medium and add gnocchi directly to the pan in a single layer. Cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy on the bottom.
  6. Gently turn gnocchi to brown on other sides, cooking for another 4-5 minutes until puffed and crusted.
  7. Return toasted walnuts to the pan and toss everything together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Remove from heat and garnish with freshly grated Parmesan if desired. Serve immediately for maximum crispness.

Notes

If gnocchi seem too soft or sticky, toss briefly in a hot pan with a little oil before adding butter. Avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if needed. For dairy-free, substitute butter with olive oil and Parmesan with nutritional yeast. Toast walnuts in the pan before browning butter for added flavor. Season at the end to balance richness.
